To reflect the increasing importance of sustainability in the business a sustainability committee a committee of the Woolworths Holdings board has been created.
The committee is chaired by Brian Frost, an independent non-executive director, and its members include Chris Nissen (independent non-executive director), Simon Susman (CEO) and Zyda Rylands (the People director).
The committee meets twice a year, in August and February. The terms of reference of this newly-apointed committee will be reflected in the corporate governance section of the 2007 annual report.
Management continues to be held responsible for driving delivery and integration of sustainability at an operational level and meets twice a year to review progress at the sustainability and transformation integration committee, chaired by Simon Susman.
Sustainability reporting relates mainly to the South African business, which accounts for more than 95% of turnover. Country Road, the Australian subsidiary, reviewed their sustainability practices in 2006.
Woolworths Holdings is part of the JSE SRI Index. In the SRI Index Outstanding Performer Disclosure 2006 rankings, we were ranked in the top 4 in the medium environmental impact classification, and ranked as the top performer in the same category.
Looking ahead, we seek to continue to manage overall sustainability reporting in a distinct and, where applicable, integrated manner.
