MADE FROM “RECYCLED” WOOD
August 1, 2008
PRESS RELEASE MADE FROM “RECYCLED” WOOD 01 August 2008 Our olive wood mortar and pestle sets are hand-crafted for us in Tunisia. This North African country is one of the world’s leading olive-producing nations, and the olive industry is strictly regulated by the government. To keep this thriving industry going, trees which no longer produce fruit need to be felled and harvested every year to make room for new saplings. An entire cottage industry has grown up around “recycling” these old, non-producing olive trees, and as part of our Good business journey, we’re always on the lookout for products which support recycling. The several-hundred-year-old wood is sold to private traders who broker the timber to smaller operators in the handcrafts industry. Using traditional tools, skilled local artisans then transform the wonderfully rich, fine-grained wood into beautiful hand-crafted pieces which are then hand pumiced, oiled and finished with a food-safe lacquer.
