With the launch of Woolworths own-label imported bubbly – a first for South African retailers – lovers of the finer things in life will now be able to enjoy a real French champagne for less than R200 per bottle. Always on the lookout for ways to offer its customers not only innovative new ideas and exciting new flavours but also great value for money, Woolworths sent its own wine team including selector, Cape Wine Master Allan Mullins, to France in search of a reasonably priced genuine champagne to add to their range of locally produced sparkling wines and pricier imports. Only sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France by the traditional method of bottle fermentation may be labelled “champagne”. Grown, made and bottled by Alexandre Bonnet, Woolworths Comtesse Alexia Brut is the classic blend of pinot noir (60%), chardonnay (25%) and pinot meunier (15%). Described by Allan as exhibiting “citrus freshness with fruity berry structure and lingering yeasty flavours,” it displays fine, lively bubbles and delicate floral aromas which enhance its fresh dryness. Delicious with seafood, sushi and cold meats and the perfect way to add sparkle to any occasion, Comtesse Alexia Brut is ready to be enjoyed now but will keep for a further two years. Retailing for R195 per bottle, it is available at selected Woolworths wine departments nationwide. ENDS
